These are Peeps...

Ok first of all. GerRee... rocks. That is all.

Oh wait you want more about Denver's most amazing night of Theater that happens every last Monday of the Month? Really... man... allllll riiiiight. Twist my arm.

Ok so here goes and not in any particular order because that just can't be fair...
1) We sang some songs

2) The Department of Redundancy Department & The Bug Present: The Ten Buddhist Tales: Showing NOW until SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY: April 5th. I can't tell you what it is about and they did three little vignettes... but I think that is the point but there are giant hands and machine guns and a musical interlude. That I can tell you. Go see it just for the interestingness of it all. This is the point.

2) Glass Chewing Boy.... Please come back

3) PEEPS!

4) did I mention that $5.00 gets you in the door with Breckenridge Brewery beers? Oh I didn't... best deal in town.... Agave Wheat... it is nice. Oh and they have rad giveaways... hold onto your ticket...

5) sword dancers and belly dancers and stand up comedians and magic and a sing song about gay republican congressmen three way and poetry and skull fucker costumes and freakie blankets and someone who wants to be so cool (but really TOTALLY IS).... GerRee singing (did I mention she is sooooo good that I cry... every, single, time...) and story time and ... and ... and.. and....

I can't give it all away because seriously... you need to go ... so get on your Freak and show up next time!

April 27, 2009. Just put it on your calendar already ... last Monday of every month... its a done deal.

PS... I will upload a couple pictures later for some reason last night and this morning blogger isn't co-operating and I am getting a fail. FAIL... boo. So I will fix later this afternoon.

PPS ... Updated with pictures because you can't wait until this afternoon can you? No.... you shouldn't have to.

It is time for a little Casa Bonita ...

Yep... Me and G have a thing.  We call it our once every couple of years thing.  See we like to go to Casa Bonita.  Seriously.  It is fun.  Now here is the deal, the last time we were there... totally ignored all the signed for the alcohol and didn't imbibe at all.  So we decided that this time... we would go armed with the idea of cheap mediocre food (it's all you can eat you know), good sopapillas and then give the margaritas a shot.

I showed up armed with 12 expired 35mm party cameras (yeah I bought them cheap for a project that people said they would participate in and then didn't) left over and handed them to my friends.  We went in and partook in all the magic.

Got an old timely picture taken... went through Black Barts Cave (beware... since I did get scared... but that is a whole nother story)... saw the cliff divers, got to hang with the gorilla.... snagged some candy from the pinata... didn't see a puppet show (nor the talking rock), saw a hot cliff diver, had a margarita, some sopapillas, walked around and had a great time.

We are good for a couple years now.

Thanks to my peeps that showed up, I had a great time with you all.

and if you are looking to remember your experiences with the Casa Bonita excitement ala Eric Cartman: South Park Studios is happy to oblige your memories!
March is magic because while we are nearly at the end of the month it means the end of monthly posts, it will move onto single event posts... aren't you pysched?  Surely you must be... ok big whup... but it will be more eloquent than ... the show was great, the people were pretty and I had a PBR.

So here we go....

Dinner at Restaurant Kevin Taylor
Denver Restraunt Week (week two)
March 2, 2009

This was my best meal of the few we went out for during Restaurant Week (times two) this year.  This was a delicate meal and honestly the BEST DAMN SHORT RIBS I have ever had.  I can't explain how delightful every morsel was that I put in my mouth.  Another to die for meal at Denver's finest restaurant.  The previous week we ate at O's which was amazing too.  And Westminster's most amazing dining establishment I think.  I seriously seriously need to get back there one night for the molecular gastronomy service... seriously.

Shat
3 Kings Tavern
March 7, 2008

What can I say about Shat? Um loud.  Um obscene and fun for a little bit.  I really had fun but it was too much for me after about 30 minutes.  I did enjoy a couple weeks before having "I'm a Vagatarian" come up on a SXSW sampler I had in my speakers at work... that was a really quick little manuever to turn the volume down.. and quick.  This is about the safest picture I have....

Those are what you think they are.  There were so many of them that honestly you almost become immune to the fact that this naked guy screaming with the headlamp is covered in dildos.  Not quite the novelty act that they could be considered.  The fans were totally into it.   Seriously.

I am glad I was able to see the spectacle.

The Bad Plus
Solied Dove
March 9, 2009

I woke up feeling like absolutely dog meat that morning... no wait that is an insult to dog meat, it was awful.  I called in work at like 6 in the morning by leaving crazy messages on my bosses voicemail (he saved it and I heard it... I sounded drugged) and a co-worker's voicemail.  I slept all day and woke up about 15 minutes before I needed to be at the show.  I thought I would regret even raising my head off the pillow but honestly it was so terrific.  The Bad Plus started out as a trio and played some originals and then this little sprite came out in her converse allstars, hipster cap and just belted it out.  I couldn't believe how fortunate I was to be able to be there... cold or no cold.  This was a really special show.  Their rendition of Blue Velvet knocked my socks off and they might not have played Tom Sawyer like I wished for (and this from a huge NOT Rush fan) but I was totally satisfied.  And the thai chicken fingers at the Tavern rule.

Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band
with DJ Country Fresh (OK OK DJ Hot to Death)
Bluebird Theater
March 13, 2008

This was a terrific evening.  Got to the show in time to see DJ Hot to Death spinning which is always great.  He is a great host (we have established my appreciation for the Monday Night Magic at the Larimer Lounge) but really a great DJ.  He can spin it all, as I saw a little later.  He caught me taking pictures and dodged me... curses... but I snapped one shot at least....

After a short break...
We were actually treated to DJ Country Fresh and Pirate Signal.  Seriously this guy has the chops man.  I was trying to take pictures and he was just moving and bringing on the hip hop.  It was awesome.  Thank you for the surprising music interlude, it wasn't expected and seriously the crowd was into it. I am only sorry that there wasn't a bigger crowd to get turned on to Pirate Signal.  Word.  I don't think I have enough cred to actually say "word" but Word.  That good.

Nick Sullivan came out for a solo set. I went down to take some pictures and straight up was insulted by another shooter at the show.  Yeah I know who you are... and yeah I am short, shoot around me meanie. Now I get that you are shooting for another blog (it will remain nameless) but I was going to take one or maybe two songs worth of shots and go back up to the balcony.  If anyone knows me and sees me places I really don't shoot entire sets because I truly am there to enjoy the show and see the music so to get all twitterpated with me about being where you want to shoot is annoying to me.  I stuck around for almost half the set and wasn't able to enjoy as much as I would have.  Thanks dude.  But thank you Nick for a great soulful set that rocked.

Reno Divorce came out and played next.  I strategically place myself right on top of (standing on the little riser to the stage right) and then in front of the other shooter, just to be a pain in the ass. It was great.  I got my shot and went up stairs to the balcony so I could enjoy the show.

Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band entered from the back of the room.  I am sad that I missed from the floor (since I was upstairs) what can only be described as a bass drum thumping call to arms to get ready for our socks being knocked off.

Another GREAT show by the clan. Seriously.  I think everytime I see them play I am more and more amazed by the fact the crowds get larger and more appreciative.  In fact one girl turned around and said to her companion... "I am so glad I got to see them".  Yeah girl... I know exactly what you are saying... she you two at the next show!
The Oddity Faire
With Secret Chiefs, Saul Williams, Yard Dogs Road Show and Les Claypool
Fillmore Auditorium
March 14, 2009
I missed the Secret Chiefs this time.  Got there right after they played. But when I walked up I got to see the weirdest duo of fights, one set of arguing people was these homeless guys.  One wouldn't let the other put his sign in his cart.  It was really awkward to see right in front of the Fillmore, then 20 feet away what I can only imagine were sisters looked like they were about to pull each others hair out.  One said "you ARE going to be that way" and the other was "no, no" then "yes yes".  It was classic.  Drunk people fighting on each end of the spectrum.  It was something.
Saul Williams came out and had an impressive slam of poetry and rock. I found honestly that I like his poetry much better than his performance. The crowd wasn't into it through the whole thing but warmed up throughout the set.  I enjoyed it very much though because it was an opportunity to see a terrific poet working the crowd.

Yard Dogs came out next... OK first let me say this... I knew a little bit about what they do since F went to the show at the Bluebird several months before.  I saw a friends pictures and was totally entranced with what they do. It's pretty damn impressive.

This cover of Nina Simone made me loose my breath for a moment
and the performance was STUNNING just stunning
Les Claypool came out with his band, a zylophone player, a percussionist and a cello player.  You wouldn't think that it would work with Les' voice and timbance but you know what? It did.  Well.  I have a series of photos and since this entry is seriously photo heavy I will limit it to a few.

d.biddle
HiDive
March 20, 2009
Another super enjoyable show at the HiDive.  Here is the magic one shot.  I really did enjoy the show that much that I had a hard time getting a really good picture.  I hadn't ever seen b.diddle so I was excited to see the show.
Houses opened the show and I had a friend say it was like a happier Fleetwood Mac.  I tend to disagree because Fleetwood Mac to me equals miserable music made by really talented people and I can't stand Stevie Nicks at all.  But I see what he was thinking.... it was a great mix of some of the very talented folks in this town.  Earlier in the week the band played and performed on the 16th Street Mall.  Pied Pipers for the Hip Denver Music scene indeed.
Everything Abscent or Distorted played next and were just as good (if not better) when I saw them in Boulder.  The dancing guy? Well this performance he played keyboards and the other instruments were played on and off by all the people in the band.  It was really amazing to see and hear.
d.biddle.... oy... d.biddle.  The same friend said to me about halfway through the set... how sexy is this ... rightie oh.  I was standing there and I think my jaw was slack by the lovely music... this was a rare occurance to see them play and I am glad I made it down there to witness the beauty.

Sketch
Drinks and Salumi
March 20, 2009

I had never been to sketch in Cherry Creek.  I was really bummed when I missed out because it closed and reopened as Tambien (which is terrific).  I heard the menu was amazing, so I always regretted not going.  Now given the opportunity to go over there last Saturday night I jumped on it.  It was wonderful.  Not the same concept as before but completely delightful.  It has reopened as a wine bar and salumi bar.   The wine list was not pricey in fact many bottles were averaging about 30 dollars which is completely affordable. Beers are available.  From PBR to fancier microbrews.  Full cocktails available as well, but you won't see those bottles featured prominantly as they are below the up-lit wine selections.  I appreciate that the wine is the art.
We were treated to a lovely selection of the treats matched to the Pinot Noir.  We were presented with a selection of three cheeses, salumi and chocolate, cherries and figs.  TOE CURLING.  Trust me when I say this is a great appetizer for what can bring you to an amazing night.(*edited to add... all of Denver knows it now too...eek*)

They have hired Charlie Masters for the front of house / menu  work and he is divine with the slicer.  Oh and the sweets.  It is a terrific move by the owners, who I think are some of the nicest folks around by the way.

The bartenders are terrific, they can tell you about each and every wine and poor a generous glass.  They refil or not with no pressure, don't upsell in an obnoxious way and are entertainers and super friendly.  This is what you want and need when you walk into someplace like this.  I instantly felt welcome, which doesn't always happen when I walk into someplace and honestly I think every single person would get the same treatment.

They have double seating at the bar, so you can sit with your sweetie.  Best part of the night ever seeing that (well that and the desert plate they set us up with).  And they are comfortable bar stools.

Met some really nice people (see what I am saying about a welcoming atmosphere?).  Ate some really good food and honestly when the Pixies "Where is My Mind" came over the speakers I have to say I was very entertained.  I can't talk about it or post the pictures but maybe when you go you will be so lucky.

Congrats on a great spot... Sketch... Its a winner in my book and can't wait to come back for more of the cherries and figs... I am drooling now.

Edited to add a couple of other reviews... just so you know that I am not bullshitting here... seriously... the place is terrific and you will treated really well... promise.... review one and review two .

New Music Mondays
Larimer Lounge
March 26, 2008

performance by: Kristina Ingham

When we were talking I thought this is going to be a singer songwriter, but this girl WAILED.

And we are now caught up with the last year of my life in shows and joints I have been that have been super memorable.

I swear ... keep watching for tomorrow... I will bring you a real treat...promise.

March 27th last year was a great night and I am glad...honored that I could wrap it up tonite as well.  This is only the beginning of what I hope to be a continued adventure you are going to take with me... and probably end up (with your permission) in some pictures even! This will be the year of show shots, people pictures and NO FOOD SHOTS... I will leave that up to others out there.  Thanks for coming this far... can't wait for more more more!

January 2009

January 2009... wow was it only a few months ago?  I miss it.  I had alot of fun.

DJ Saviour Breath at New Music Monday
Larimer Lounge
January 5, 2009

DJ Saviour Breath in the house... fun night of some really great mixes and beats.  I shook my booty and danced even.  Danced in the Larimer? Really? Yeah I did and I am bragging about it.

Solar Bears / Everything Absent or Distorted
Boulder Theater
January 15, 2008

No pictures because I wasn't comfortable pulling out my camera really.  I had to stealthy take my camera out to take a picture of the really cool looking bar even.  I got a really stern "don't do that look" from someone that worked there, so not to rock the boat, I put it away.

This was the first time I saw Solar Bears, I really did enjoy their show and their lights.  They had been on the Mile High Fidelity show a couple days before so it was nice to hear the music live.

Everything Abscent or Distorted headlined.  It was un-real.  I hadn't seen them before either.  The interplay of the musicians playing multiple instruments and harmonizing made me really happy and I had to ... had to sneak at least one picture. It is blurry because I snapped it super quickly and not with any thought to focus or anything else.  Its a dumb shot.  But then again... I kind of like it.  So there.

I liked how at one point there seemingly was a guy who did nothing more that dance behind the band.  He played a tambourine.  I thought... ok seriously... i could do that in a band.  Too bad that guy already has the job, I would totally audition for that except I can't really keep any rhythym so I would not be allowed to man handle that tambourine meaning I wouldn't have any purpose and they would not let me in the band then.  So... my dreams dashed in that one modest little moment listening to them.  But that is how nice they were that I actually got inspired to find a way into a band.  Really.  True story.

Mark Mothersbaugh gallery opening for Postcard Diaries
with Guest DJ - Magic Cyclops
Andeken Gallery
January 16, 2009

It's Magic Cyclops!  It's Magic Cyclops with puppets.  It was really fun.  There were these kids there who were just having the BEST time, dancing and rolling around on the gallery floor.  Sometimes that exhuberance is annoying but this time absolutely precious.  I really really wanted to take pictures of them, but I didn't know who their parents are/were but because I know that there are some rules about taking pictures of strangers children and posting them on the internet.
So I took pictures of the gallery with no people except the guy working for Mark Mothersbaugh who was running the merch table, talking on his cellphone and taking pictures of the folks in the gallery, it was really quite impressive multi-tasking.  I loved this peice of work and then pondered and pondered and pondered and then though if I still wanted it I could go back and then of course I didn't. But I seem to have a little clown art thing going so I might have to re-contemplate.  Mark Mothersbaugh wasn't at the opening and I don't know if they did a live chat or not, but the show was really neat.  I love the multi-media collage work and his nod to the postcard was rad. I try to send out postcards at least once a month to my people (its always nice to get real mail and not bills in the mail) but have sadly been lacking in these first few months.  OH and if you want to be added to the list send me your email and I will get your address. I kinda have some ideas.  Maybe I do a Mark Mothersbaugh inspired set or something ridiculous.  Who knows.  Maybe I just oogle the art at shows and not mail anything. Ran into some friends which was fun and got a slight contact high walking around in one of the instalations which was actually more than slightly awesome.  And for the record if this was a Beautiful Mutants exhibit...I probably wouldn't have hesitated for moment to buy something.
Harpoontang
 Lions Lair
January 16, 2009
Sadly I can't really write about it.  Why because it was so awesome and you seriously just have to get a listen to it yourself.  This was also (outside of the Mike Marchant cd release earlier in the month) the first time I got to actually talk with Lance Stack of Flat Response.  He is so awesome, generous and really a nice nice guy.  If you see him at a show, go up and say thanks for recording some cool shows!  Here is the link to the show download: Harpoontang - Lions Lair  And seriously, after you listen and totally enjoy, let him know you appreciate the recording because it was perhaps the funnest thing I had seen in a really long time.  It was short and sweet and super fun and funny. These ladies are perhaps the most talented vocalists in Denver singing in some of the sweetest and harmounious bands so to see them let a little (heh) loose (heh heh) was awesome.   And for the record I always like shows at the Lions Lair.  Something always interesting happens and the people there are always really happy to be there.  I do miss the booths (there is part of one left behind the door) but its a small price to pay for Denver's funnest show.

New Music Night with Guest DJs Heather Browne - I am Fuel You are Friends and Meese
Larimer Lounge
January 19, 2009

Didn't dance but there were people that did.  There was a dance troupe with hula hoops!  Heather rocked the tables and the guys from Meese mixed it up for our pleasure.  Belated birthday drinks for DJ Hot to Death as well.  Brought the good camera out and gave it a spin.  Took completely ridiculous pictures and had a great time (as usual). Another stellar night at the Larimer Lounge.

I really have to say this was a hit.  Had a great time.

Freak Train
Bug Theater
January 26, 2009

A really fun night started off with a delicious dinner at Patsy's then the Freak was on.

Full admission here.  I had never been to Freak Train.  I should have gone to Freak Train.  It is pathologically wrong that I hadn't ever gone to Freak Train. There... it is out there.  The truth is out there.  I had alot of fun.  Heard a not so children's children's bedtime story, heard some funnies, saw some interpretive dance about what I think was sausage,  heard some poetry, laughed about corn and decided it would be a long long time before I ate canned corn again (it did take about a month), took a picture (shhhhh don't bust me) with my cell phone, because I was happy oh and I won tickets to a show at the Oriental that was a fundraiser, well F won the tickets but gave me his ticket so I could be the winner... nice boy.

But it was driving home in the snow and making a wrong turn in order for me to find the most magical place.

This is a small church in the Highlands, can't tell you exactly where, but as I was driving by I just was awestruck by the lighting the colors and how beautiful it was.  I am pysched that I had my good camera with me and took a snapshot of the moment.

Reverend Horton Heat
Ogden Theater
January 30, 2009

I remember the last time I went to see the Reverend Horton Heat it was mid 90s, the swing was the thing, the rockabilly swing thing... totally the thing.  I remember a gal whose hair extensions looked so incredibly painful I couldn't imagine why she didn't just have them taken out and the glue was red and looked like crusted blood. It was awful.  Nothing as memorible outside of the music this time around.

Reno Divorce opened the show and true to the words of others... they are exactly like Denver's very own Social D... down to the greaser following and sound.  It was awesome.

Slim Ceasna's Auto Club was next.  Always ALWAYS a pleasure to see Slim and Munly work their magic.  It was so heavy down on the floor that I had to take my pictures on uber zoom from the balcony.  Didn't take too many because I was really there to see the show... but they just absolutely killed.

Ok I snuck down to the fray and got down in the pit and took a few shots... I couldn't help myself.

January 31, 2009
Went to the show... missed BSous which was a drag.  But Dressy Bessy just kicked it.
